Flooding incident on the Marlbank (County Fermanagh and County Cavan) Sunday 20th July 2025.
On the evening of Sunday 20th July 2025 there was an intense rain downpour on the Marlbank and the catchments of several cave systems were inundated with rapid runoff. Significant localised flooding occurred both on the surface and underground.
The cave systems impacted were Pollnagossan, Cavan Burren caves, Shannon Cave, Hammer Pot, Hanging Rock, Pollnasalac, Monastir caves, Sruh Croppa caves, Marble Arch-Cascades caves, Prod’s Pot, Little Gortmaconnel and Tullyhona.
In the Cladagh Glen a significant landslide was triggered by the rainfall, which has damaged the path just upstream of Cascades Resurgence. The Cladagh Glen has been closed by the local authority on health and safety grounds whilst the landslide is assessed. As the Cladagh Glen is closed there is no access to Cascades Cave.
In the cave systems affected, many mud banks have been washed out and redeposited. There are reports of some boulders also having moved, so do remain cautious if you are visiting the above caves and do expect to notice changes in the streamways.
The following changes to caves are noted:
• the Wet Wiggle (Legnabrocky Way, Marble Arch Caves) has filled with silt but can still be accessed and is passable
• some boulder movement has occurred in the entrance chokes to Pollnagollum of the Boats
• Owing to the landslide in the Cladagh Glen, Cascades Resurgence Cave is closed.
Please do reach out to local cavers to get up to date information on access and cave conditions. As always, if whilst caving you notice any cave passage that has become unstable then please let either SUI Access and Conservation officer or SUI Chair know then we can share with the caving community.
