Talks

Aly Coyle: Surveying expedition to Belize

In 2019 I was invited to join an American caving team on expedition underneath the jungles of Belize as they pushed leads, surveyed passages and ultimately tried to find a hydrological and human connection between 2 previously unexplored systems. This talk recounts some of the ups and downs of this expedition above and below ground.

Les Brown: Why is Pollnagossan so flood prone?

Pollnagossan Cave (Cornagee Td., County Cavan) lies in the north western part of the Cuilcagh uplands and forms part of karst systems that drain the limestone aquifer below the Cavan Burren. This presentation is an update into the hydrogeology of Pollnagossan Cave, which is part of ongoing CatchmentCARE studies for the Arney Catchment. The focus of this presentation is to provide an overview of why the flooding occurs but also to give an indication of the frequency and severity of events.

Andreas Klocker: Beyond the Sump – Cave diving for exploration and science in one of the world’s most spectacular deep caves

Andreas started his caving career in 2008 in the Junee-Florentine in Tasmania which is seen by most as Australian’s most challenging caving area.

While being the driving force behind the exploration efforts in this region since, he has also been caving and cave diving on several big international expeditions in Mexico, New Zealand, and West Papua. In 2015, Andreas, and American cave diver Zeb Lilly, led a successful push in Sistema Huautla, the World’s 8th deepest cave, to explore beyond several sumps in an area of the cave known as Redball Canyon.

It was on this expedition they two decided to restart efforts to connect Sistema Huautla’s Sump 9, also known as the “Mother of all Sumps”, to its resurgence 10km away in the remote Santo Domingo canyon.

Since then Andreas has led four major cave diving expeditions to this region, with the two-month long 2018 expedition to the Cueva de la Peña Colorada, involving an international team of 24 highly experienced cave divers. This talk will cover some of the amazing history behind the exploration of the Huautla cave system, and focus on what turned out to be an epic adventure into the Cueva de la Peña Colorada.

Shane Diffly: Hypothermia: Insights for cavers from 2021 seminar run by BASICS Scotland

Shane will present a summary of insights relevant to cavers from the conference “Hypothermia: an International Approach” hosted by the British Association of Immediate Care (BASICS) Scotland earlier this year. This includes an overview of the Swiss Staging System for diagnosing hypothermia, some remarkable examples of people who have recovered from low temperature exposure, as well as the latest research for dealing with hypothermic casualties, as shared by conference participants.

Petie Barry: Gorteen 2020 – The Shannon Group’s Leitrim exped

Amidst the ravages of the plague, the Shannon Group carried out a week-long exped to the Gorteenaguinnell area in County Leitrim, to continue their decade-long effort to survey and catalogue the caves of the Truskmore Massif.

Petie Barrie: Fexped 2021 – An Anglo-Irish exped in Fermanagh-Cavan

As a follow-on from the successful Gorteen 2020 exped, the Shannon Group spent a week caving in Fermanagh, focusing on several neglected East Cuilcagh caves. With the help of a merry band of English cavers we managed to resurvey the entirely of Pollnaclanawley and Pollnatagagh-Pollpruglisk, among a myriad of other projects.

Tony Seddon: The Ario Dream

Lots of cavers work jolly hard to enable one diver to have a horrid time; and then another diver impersonates a baby whale. Completed with philosophy and singing.
