Inclusivity Statement and Trans Caving Event

Published by Chairperson on

Recent trends in Ireland and Worldwide have seen members of the Transgender community, and in particular transgender women, being excluded by sporting bodies.

The Speleological Union of Ireland (SUI) as the national governing body for caving on the whole island of Ireland hereby reiterates its support for people of all genders, gender identities and gender expressions in caving as outlined in our Diversity and Equality policy.

Through our recent initiatives such as Women of the Underground and Delving into the Dark we are working to increase diversity in caving. As trans women are women, they are most welcome to join those activities that are aimed at increasing female participation in caving, however we recognise that sometimes a safer space is needed.

The SUI is supporting a caving trip for transgender, non-binary and gender questioning people, led by qualified cave leaders who are members of the LGBT community, or allies, and suitable for beginners. Details will follow on our social media closer to the event.
